The goal of this project is to create a safe and supportive sensory room where students can regulate their emotions, meet their sensory needs, and prepare themselves to return to learning. The space will provide structured opportunities for calming, movement, and sensory exploration.
Students will use the sensory room with staff support based on their individual needs. They will be taught how to appropriately use sensory tools, request a break, select a regulation activity, and return to instruction when ready. Activities may include movement, calming exercises, tactile exploration, and the use of flexible seating and other sensory support.
The sensory room will give students an appropriate place to manage sensory needs and practice self regulation skills. It may help students become calmer, improve their readiness to learn, increase participation in classroom activities, and reduce behavior that interfere with instruction. The room will also help staff provide consistent, proactive support before student become overwhelmed.
Grant funds will be used to purchase developmentally appropriate sensory equipment and materials, including flexible seating, movement equipment, calming tools, tactile items, visual support, noise-reduction materials and storage supplies. These items will be used to create an organized, safe and accessible sensory room that support students with a variety of sensory and self regulation needs.
