The goal is to have a sensory room filled with materials or equipment that our population of students can have access to here in the school. The goal is for it to be an instructional and regulation space where students learn to recognize and manage sensory needs so they can return to instruction, participate safely, and access the curriculum.
Students can have the sensory input that they want/need to properly function throughout the day. They can walk through a sensory tent, have access to a crash pad, or a peanut ball, have tactile exploration, different lighting options, and movement/ gross motor opportunities.
Our students would have access to learning by having an opportunity to regulate and then return to the classroom ready to learn. Helps reduce challenging behaviors by those students who are seeking sensory input. This also supports PBIS here at Highlands by teaching students how to recognize when they need a break, ask for a break appropriately, and learn how to transition back to class.
The project will benefit students across our school, including students with autism and other disabilities, while providing staff with consistent, research-informed tools and strategies for supporting student regulation.
