Color is Life! Let's Paint Like Alma Woodsy Thomas

The goal of this project is for Kindergarten and First Grade artists to create a work art using vibrant color fields inspired by the work of the famous abstract artist, Alma Thomas. Artists will integrate the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, focusing on color, line, shape and pattern. Another goal is to use sequential processes and procedures as means of self expression, resulting in a unique, creative work of art.

Using solid tempera paint sticks artists will begin with a dashed line on their paper creating a small circle or heart. They will then choose various colors of paint sticks to create concentric dashed lines around their original shape.

Alma Thomas said, "Color is life! Through color I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness, rather than on man's inhumanity to man." Each year when kindergarten students enter the art room they are taken by a poster of Alma Thomas' art work titled Eclipse. They tell me they want to paint like that. A great benefit of this project is that young artists feel and express joy and happiness through concentration, color and line. They are proud to see their work displayed in the media center and office-sharing the their joy with others. They also benefit from hands on learning about pattern, color, shape that cross into other academic studies such as mathematics and science.

Thank you for your consideration for funding the solid tempera paint for this project. The art department budget covers basic art supplies. However, for this project I would like to use a specialty product, Kwik Stix solid tempera. This product enables young artists to explore various tools/media and these paints are especially vibrant and easy to apply nature. The result is an awe inspiring piece of self expression for each young artist!
