To stretch reading stamina and comprehension by challenging 2nd-grade students to read above-level chapter books from the standard SSYRA (Grades 3-5) list, empowering them to transition into complex narratives and build advanced literacy skills.
This literacy initiative provides a dedicated classroom set of age-appropriate chapter books from the official Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA Grades 3–5) list to challenge and enrich second-grade students. While these titles are traditionally targeted at upper-elementary grades, they serve as an excellent enrichment tool for motivated second graders—scaffolding their transition into complex, multi-chapter narratives, expanding their academic vocabulary, and building advanced reading endurance.
This project yields significant academic and developmental advantages for second-grade students. By introducing the SSYRA Grades 3–5 list via dedicated classroom sets, the initiative achieves the following core benefits:
- Chapter Book Transition: Moving from picture books or early readers to complex, multi-chapter novels can be daunting. This project provides a structured environment that bridges that gap before students enter the third grade.
-Exposure to above-grade-level texts introduces rich, context-driven vocabulary
-The structured challenge of reading multiple books to earn a vote in the statewide election teaches students how to set, track, and achieve long-term academic benchmarks.
Funding is requested to purchase paired classroom text sets (two copies per title) for eight select introductory-level chapter books and graphic novels from the official Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA Grades 3–5) list.
