This project will provide every K–5 student with regular access to a personal sketchbook and drawing materials for brainstorming, observation, reflection, and creative problem-solving. Sketchbooks will help students see artmaking as a process of developing ideas rather than simply producing a final product.
The project addresses the need for individual materials that promote independence and allow students to practice drawing, visual journaling, planning, and revision. It aligns with Florida Visual Arts standards for generating and developing artistic ideas, refining work through feedback, and reflecting on artistic growth.
This project supports school and district priorities of student ownership, literacy, critical thinking, perseverance, and social-emotional development.
Students will use sketchbooks at the beginning and end of art lessons to respond to prompts, practice observation, plan compositions, record new vocabulary, and reflect on their choices. Lessons will include contour drawing, observational drawing, color experimentation, visual storytelling, and planning for larger projects.
Students will respond to classroom connections such as science observations, reading themes, local environments, or community celebrations. They will select work that shows growth, participate in peer discussions, and set personal art goals. Sketchbooks will remain with students throughout the year, creating a visible record of their artistic progress.
Students will become more independent, reflective, and willing to take creative risks. Regular sketchbook practice will strengthen drawing confidence, visual communication, fine-motor skills, observation, and persistence.
Success will be measured through sketchbook completion, teacher observation, student self-assessments, and beginning- and end-of-year drawing samples. At least 85% of students will show growth in their ability to plan an artwork, use art vocabulary, and reflect on one area of personal artistic improvement.
Grant funds will provide personal sketchbooks and essential drawing materials for approximately 600 K–5 students. Sketchbooks will give students a consistent space to brainstorm, observe, practice new techniques, plan larger artworks, record art vocabulary, revise ideas, and reflect on their growth. Pencils, erasers, colored pencils, fine-tip markers, oil pastels, and sharpeners will ensure that every student can participate fully in visual journaling and process-based art instruction. These materials directly support student ownership, creative confidence, perseverance, visual communication, and reflection. The sketchbooks will also provide concrete evidence of student growth through beginning-of-year and end-of-year work samples
