To provide students with the materials needed to participate in meaningful, hands-on Project-Based Learning (PBL) experiences that transform classroom knowledge into tangible products, presentations, and solutions. The goal is to increase student engagement while strengthening academic knowledge, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Throughout the school year, students will participate in individual and collaborative projects connected directly to Social Studies and Career & Technical Education standards. Students will research topics, develop ideas, solve problems, create products, and present their work to classmates and authentic audiences.
Projects may include historical timelines and exhibits, geographic displays, infographics, career exploration projects, entrepreneurship activities, financial literacy projects, business concepts, public-awareness campaigns, and other standards-based demonstrations of learning.
Students will use materials such as poster board, cardstock, markers, colored pencils, construction paper, presentation materials, and other basic supplies to turn their research and ideas into finished products.
This approach is supported by a growing body of research. A meta-analysis of 30 studies involving more than 12,500 students found that Project-Based Learning had a medium-to-large positive effect on academic achievement, with stronger effects reported in social science subjects. A 2023 meta-analysis of 66 experimental and quasi-experimental studies also found positive effects on academic achievement, learning outcomes, attitudes, and thinking skills. Research has also found positive PBL outcomes for students in high-poverty settings, including gains in Social Studies and informational reading.
Project-Based Learning gives students an opportunity to move beyond simply recalling information and instead apply what they have learned. Students must research, evaluate information, make decisions, communicate ideas, work with others, and create something that demonstrates their understanding.
The materials funded by this grant will allow students to participate in authentic, hands-on learning regardless of their ability to purchase supplies themselves. This is especially important when projects require students to work collaboratively and produce professional-quality presentations.
The project will support both academic achievement and the development of skills students will need in high school, college, careers, and everyday life—including communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, organization, and problem-solving.
Funding will provide a shared classroom supply of consumable materials used throughout the school year for Project-Based Learning activities. Rather than purchasing supplies for a single project, the requested materials will support multiple projects and multiple groups of students across Social Studies and CTE courses.
The requested materials include poster board and presentation boards, markers, colored pencils, cardstock and construction paper, adhesives, scissors, index cards, display materials, and other basic project supplies. These materials will allow students to create visual presentations, models, timelines, infographics, research displays, business concepts, and other demonstrations of learning.
The relatively modest investment will provide students with repeated opportunities throughout the year to research, create, collaborate, and demonstrate what they know.
