The goal of this project is to provide students with disabilities, including students with Other Health Impairments OHI, and Specific Learning Disabilities SLD, with organizational tools and materials that will help them become more independent, responsible, and successful in their academic classes. Many of the students receiving special education services need additional support with executive functioning skills such as organization, time management, keeping track of their assignments, and preparing for upcoming deadlines. When students struggle in these areas, missing assignments and misplaced materials can quickly impact their academic progress and confidence.
Grant funding will be used to create individualized organization systems for students using materials such as academic planners, color-coordinated folders and files, pencil cases, organizational supplies, and other learning materials. Color-coding and clearly organized materials will allow students to easily identify resources for each class, keep track of completed and missing work, and plan for upcoming assignments, tests, and projects.
These materials will be incorporated into students' special education support services, where they receive additional assistance with their coursework, grades, assignments, and individual learning needs. Students will be explicitly taught how to use their organizational systems rather than simply being provided with supplies.
The overall goal and purpose of funding this grant is to help students stay ahead of their assignments, improve work completion, reduce missing or late work, strengthen executive functioning skills, and take greater ownership of their education.
