Building Community Through Self-Portrait Class Shirts

The goal of this project is to strengthen classroom community, student identity, and a sense of belonging through the creation of self-portrait class T-shirts. Students will create individual self-portraits that will be combined into a collaborative class design and printed on a T-shirt for every student. The project celebrates each child's individuality while reinforcing that every student is an important part of our classroom community.

Each student in my third-grade class will create a hand-drawn self-portrait to be included on our class T-shirt. Students will reflect on their individuality while also recognizing themselves as part of a larger classroom community. The individual portraits will be combined into one collaborative design and printed on a T-shirt for every student through A+ Images, Inc. Classroom Faces. Students will wear their class shirts throughout the year. Seeing every classmate represented on the shirt will provide students with a tangible reminder that each person belongs and contributes to our classroom community.

The self-portrait class T-shirts will help build a stronger sense of belonging, connection, and classroom pride. Students will see their own artwork represented alongside the artwork of their classmates, reinforcing both individuality and unity. The shirts will also create a shared class identity that students can proudly wear to help strengthen relationships and a positive classroom community.

Grant funds will be used to purchase one custom self-portrait class T-shirt for each student. The cost includes the shirts, artwork processing, screen charges, and shipping. Funding will ensure that every student receives a shirt and can fully participate in this classroom community-building experience.
