The goal of this project is to provide 5th grade students with hands-on science materials that allow them to actively investigate, explore, and apply concepts aligned with the Florida Science Standards. Students will use scientific tools and materials to conduct experiments, make observations, collect and analyze data, create models, and use evidence to support their conclusions. These hands-on experiences will strengthen students’ understanding of science concepts while building curiosity, critical-thinking skills, collaboration, and confidence as young scientists.
Students will participate in engaging, hands-on science investigations throughout the school year that directly support 5th grade Florida Science Standards. Working individually and in collaborative groups, students will use scientific tools and materials to observe, measure, test, build models, and collect data.
Students will conduct investigations involving properties and changes of matter, mixtures, forces and motion, energy, Earth and space science, weather, and life science. During these activities, students will ask testable questions, identify variables, make predictions, conduct repeated trials, measure and record results, create tables and graphs, and analyze patterns in their data.
Following investigations, students will use their observations and data as evidence to explain their findings through classroom discussions, science notebooks, and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) responses. These experiences will allow students to learn science by **doing science**, helping them make meaningful connections between classroom concepts and the real world.
This project will provide students with meaningful hands-on experiences that make science engaging, relevant, and easier to understand. By actively participating in investigations, students will strengthen their understanding of 5th grade Florida Science Standards while developing critical-thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills.
Hands-on learning will give students opportunities to connect classroom concepts to real-world experiences and take greater ownership of their learning. Students will gain confidence using scientific tools, collecting and analyzing data, and supporting conclusions with evidence. These experiences will also encourage curiosity and excitement about science while helping prepare students for future science learning and Florida science assessments.
Because many of the requested supplies are reusable, the benefits of this project will extend beyond one lesson or school year, allowing many students to experience high-quality, hands-on science learning.
Grant funds will be used to purchase hands-on science supplies and equipment that will directly support 5th grade science investigations aligned with the Florida Science Standards. Funding will provide essential materials such as measuring tools, thermometers, graduated cylinders, balances, magnifying glasses, magnets, containers, safety equipment, modeling materials, and other supplies needed for students to conduct investigations.
Priority will be given to purchasing durable, reusable equipment that can be organized into classroom investigation kits and used with multiple classes throughout the school year and in future years. The funding will help ensure that students have consistent access to the tools and materials necessary to learn science by doing science.
