Poinciana Elementary utilizes a school-wide positive behavior system known as The Peli-CAN Way. This initiative is designed to establish and strengthen a unified culture of positive behavior, attitudes, and mindsets across our campus.
As part of our main goal, we seek to empower students to consistently demonstrate positive behavior and make choices that reflect our school-wide expectations. The Peli-CAN Way provides year-round guidance and reinforcement of behavioral expectations while promoting a positive mindset, personal responsibility, resiliency, and leadership.
Through a variety of incentives and recognition opportunities, students are positively acknowledged for demonstrating expected behaviors, making responsible choices, showing perseverance, and serving as positive role models for others.
By implementing The Peli-CAN Way consistently school-wide, we anticipate a decrease in discipline referrals and challenging behaviors while increasing student resiliency, leadership, positive decision-making, and a strong sense of belonging within the Poinciana Elementary community.
As part of The Peli-CAN Way, one of our positive behavior incentives will be a monthly Student of the Month recognition. Each classroom will select one student who consistently demonstrates the specific school-wide behavior expectation or positive mindset highlighted for that month.
Selected students will receive a monthly Peli-CAN Way Brag Tag, designed specifically around that month's expectation. Students will proudly display their Brag Tag on their student ID lanyard, allowing them to be visibly recognized as positive role models and leaders within our school community.
This recognition will provide students with a meaningful opportunity to celebrate their positive choices and demonstrate that their actions matter. Students receiving a Brag Tag will be recognized as Peli-CAN leaders who exemplify our school's expectations and contribute to a positive, respectful, and supportive school culture.
The Peli-CAN Way school-wide positive behavior program will foster positive attitudes, mindsets, and behaviors among students and staff while extending these skills beyond the school setting and into students' homes and communities. Through consistent modeling, instruction, recognition, and reinforcement, students will have opportunities to strengthen their social-emotional skills, make positive choices, develop resiliency, and practice a growth-oriented mindset each day.
As the School Counselor, I will help guide and support the implementation of The Peli-CAN Way, including the rollout of the monthly behavior expectations and the Brag Tag recognition program. Each month, students who demonstrate the highlighted expectation will be recognized as Students of the Month and receive a Brag Tag to proudly display on their student ID lanyard. This visible recognition will celebrate positive behavior while providing students with opportunities to be recognized as leaders and role models within the school.
School-wide bulletin boards, posters, and visual displays will reinforce the monthly expectations and positive mindsets. These consistent visual reminders will provide teachers and staff with common language and resources to model, teach, recognize, and reinforce the behaviors and skills associated with The Peli-CAN Way. This shared approach will help create consistency across classrooms and throughout the campus.
Students will also benefit from being active participants in creating and maintaining a positive school environment. When students understand the expectations and are recognized for meeting them, they become an important part of building a school culture where kindness, responsibility, perseverance, leadership, and positive decision-making are valued. Creating an inviting and encouraging environment can positively influence the attitudes and experiences of everyone on campus.
Ultimately, The Peli-CAN Way will support our goal of decreasing disciplinary concerns while increasing positive behavior, social skills, resiliency, and student leadership. As students are recognized for their strengths and positive contributions, they will be empowered to see themselves as leaders who help make Poinciana Elementary a welcoming, positive, and successful place to learn and grow.
