As we move forward with our Science of Reading focus and instruction using the CKLA program, we would like the opportunity for parents to have quality reading material for their first graders at home. We often have feedback from our parents that they would like books that support what we are teaching in our classrooms. The goal of the project would be to have students in all grade one classes have access to books which they could decode and share at home with their parents.
The students would have the opportunity to read phonics based readers in class and then take these home to share with their parents. Teachers and/or students would select books to be sent home weekly. The parents would then be able to see what skills the students have been learning in class and they would be able to understand and support this learning at home.
This grant would benefit all students currently in grade one as the books support the most basic readers to more fluent first graders.
These books are supplemental in nature and therefore require additional funding not in our regular school budget. If this grant is fully funded, all first graders and their families would be positively impacted with additional reading material.
