The goal of this project is to deepen students' understanding of one of our class novels, The Outsiders, while helping them master the Florida B.E.S.T. ELA standards through an engaging, authentic learning experience. Students will strengthen argumentative and informative writing, literary analysis, perspective analysis, speaking and listening, collaboration, and evidence-based reasoning by applying these skills in a realistic courtroom setting.
Students will participate in an immersive mock trial of State vs. Johnny Cade, with me serving as the judge while students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, jurors, and news reporters. Attorneys will prepare persuasive opening and closing statements, question witnesses, and support their claims with textual evidence. Witnesses will defend their assigned character's actions and motivations using evidence from the novel. Jurors will actively listen to testimony, evaluate evidence, deliberate collaboratively, and justify their verdict. News reporters will observe the proceedings and write objective articles summarizing the trial and its outcome. By transforming our classroom into a courtroom, students will apply literacy skills in an engaging, standards-based experience that brings The Outsiders to life.
Transforming our classroom into an interactive courtroom will immerse students in an authentic learning experience where every student has an active role. Rather than simply just reading The Outsiders, students will analyze evidence, defend perspectives, evaluate arguments, and apply their understanding of the novel in meaningful ways.
This project strengthens essential literacy skills aligned to the Florida B.E.S.T. ELA standards, including argumentative and informative writing, literary analysis, perspective-taking, speaking and listening, collaboration, and evidence-based reasoning. Students will learn to support claims with textual evidence, communicate ideas effectively, think critically, and respectfully evaluate differing viewpoints.
The courtroom simulation also increases student engagement, confidence, and participation by giving students ownership of their learning. Through authentic roles and collaborative problem-solving, students gain a deeper understanding of the novel while building communication and critical-thinking skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Grant funds will be used to purchase reusable materials that will transform our classroom into an interactive courtroom for a mock trial. Requested materials include student folders, a mobile storage cart, tabletop microphones, courtroom name tags and lanyards, courtroom signs, a courtroom backdrop, copy paper, clip-on ties for student attorneys, and judge accessories, including a gavel and sound block. These materials will create an authentic courtroom environment while providing the resources needed to organize trial exhibits, evidence, and student work. Because most of the supplies are durable and reusable, they will support mock trials and other standards-based learning experiences this year and future years.
