The goal of this project is to use musical keyboards as an avenue for educating students about the diverse cultures of the world and the musical genres that reflect their histories, traditions, and values. This project will foster creativity and cultural awareness by encouraging students to compare musical traditions, identify common and similar elements among different genres, and recognize the unique characteristics that make each culture's music distinct. This project combines keyboard instruction with multicultural music exploration to advance student achievement through: technical proficiency, cultural literacy, and an extended appreciation for different music around the world.
Every student will apply their learning through keyboard performance, practicing and interacting with musical selections that represent diverse cultural traditions. As they develop technical proficiency on the keyboard, they will also strengthen their understanding of global musical diversity and the role music plays in preserving cultural identity and fostering human connection. Through a myriad of listening activities, guided discussions, and musical analysis, students will interact with musical elements across cultures, identifying both shared characteristics and unique traditions. They will investigate the historical and cultural significance of selected musical works, harmonies and instrumentation, specifically gaining insight into the specific choices, customs, and patterns each unique culture represents
Over the course of the project, students will participate in collaborative learning experiences that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation. By analyzing and performing music from multiple countries and cultures, students will expand their musical knowledge, develop greater cultural awareness, and build an appreciation for the rich diversity of artistic expression found throughout the world.
Students will benefit by developing keyboard performance skills and musical literacy while expanding their knowledge of musical genres from around the world. Students will also gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between music and culture, exploring how musical traditions reflect the histories, values, and experiences of different communities. These experiences will broaden their musical perspectives and hopefully foster an appreciation for new music as they mature around a very culturally diverse world.
