The main purpose of "Shining Stars for our Shelves: Award-Winning Books for Every Reader" is to expand access to high-quality, award-winning books, strengthen the library’s collection, and promote literacy by providing engaging, diverse, and carefully selected books that appeal to all readers, including those who may be underserved or less likely to read. Additional goals are to read each of the books and take an Accelerated Reading quiz on each book which will earn points for the student and their class. Accelerated Reader is a School and District priority. By providing and encouraging students to read these books, I hope that they will enjoy the opportunity of reading for pleasure and instill a love of reading.
Students will engage in independent reading /read alouds, book discussions, and take comprehension quizzes on these books. They will have access to Sunshine State Reader (Fiction) and Sunshine State Reader Jr., titles for 2026-2027.
If my request is funded, adding these award-winning books to the library collection will help elementary students with vocabulary development, fluency, and comprehension. The titles are all new and recently published books which create high interest to our students and they take pride in reading these books as they are highlighted in the Media Center on a display. Reading these books will help students build stronger language skills, boost their critical thinking, and introduce them to diverse perspectives. These high-quality stories spark a lifelong love for reading by offering engaging plots and rich vocabulary tailored for young minds. Progress can be measured through reviewing students Accelerated Reader scores and book discussions with groups.
The requested funds ($285.00) will be used to purchase five Sunshine State Reader (3-5) books, and all of the Sunshine State Reader Jr. (K-2) books. Sunshine State Young Reader Award books are fiction, recently published, high interest titles. The titles to be purchased are listed and the books will support all 464 students at Golden Gate Elementary School in the Media Center.
