My goal is that our over 800 students, many of which come from homes where English is the second language, will be able to increase their vocabulary. In order to do this, one key component is understanding the meaning of words. It is important for students to understand how to use dictionaries, as opposed to solely website based definitions, as it assists with spelling, memory, comprehension, parts of speech, and researching skills. The necessity of these dictionaries is amplified by the fact that we are a Title I school; many of our parents cannot carry the cost of providing a dictionary for each child.
Students will use these dictionaries to identify unknown words in class. They will also be used to identify and understand roots, prefixes, and affixes. They will be used throughout the school year to assist students with spelling, increased reading comprehension, vocabulary practice, and connotative versus denotative meaning.
The benefits of having a classroom set in each ELA class will provide students with the opportunity to achieve success in the classroom and allow them to understand unfamiliar words, thereby increasing their vocabulary. As students grow from each grade level, they will have an increased vocabulary achievement level which will help them perform higher in both state assessments and SAT and ACT exams for college admission.
