The goal of Bird Nerds is to engage 4th and 5th grade students in authentic, hands-on science through bird observation. Students will learn to identify local Florida bird species, observe their behaviors and adaptations, and collect and record real-world data. Through weekly observations, students will track bird species and populations, compare their findings over time and across locations, and use their data to recognize patterns and draw scientific conclusions. The project will build students’ skills in observation, data collection, classification, and scientific thinking while developing an appreciation for the wildlife in their own community.
Bird Nerds will meet weekly for one hour after school. Students will participate in outdoor bird observations using binoculars and field guides to identify local species by their appearance, behavior, habitat, and calls. Students will record the species and number of birds they observe, keep individual birding journals, and collect data throughout the school year. They will compare observations over time, look for patterns, create graphs, and discuss how factors such as season, weather, and habitat may affect bird activity. Students will also be encouraged to make observations at home and use the free Merlin Bird ID app when a device is available. These experiences will allow students to practice real scientific skills while investigating the birds living in their own community.
Bird Nerds will give students the opportunity to experience science beyond the classroom through authentic observation and data collection. Students will strengthen their ability to identify and classify local bird species, make careful observations, collect and organize data, recognize patterns, and draw conclusions from evidence. Success will be measured through student birding journals, recorded species counts, graphs, and comparisons of observations throughout the year. Students will also develop a greater understanding and appreciation of Florida’s native wildlife and the environment in their own community.
Grant funds will be used primarily to purchase quality binoculars and Florida bird field guides for Bird Nerds. Binoculars will allow students to safely observe birds closely without disturbing them, while field guides will ensure that every student can participate in bird identification regardless of access to a personal device. Funds will also support individual birding journals for recording observations and data.
Palmetto Elementary has already committed funding for bird feeders and birdseed. This grant will build upon that investment by providing the specialized equipment students need to observe, identify, and study the birds attracted to our campus. The binoculars and field guides will be reusable, allowing the project to benefit Bird Nerds students for many years.
