The goal of this project is to foster a love of reading and support literacy growth by providing students with access to a complete set of Sunshine State Young Readers Award books and comfortable floor seating for independent and small-group reading. The Sunshine State books will expose students to high-quality, age-appropriate literature that encourages comprehension, critical thinking, and meaningful discussions. The addition of floor pillows will create a welcoming and flexible learning environment where students can comfortably engage in sustained reading, book clubs, and collaborative literacy activities. Through increased access to engaging texts and a cozy reading space, students will develop stronger reading habits, improve literacy skills, and build lifelong enthusiasm for reading.
Students will use the Sunshine State Young Readers Award books during whole-group read-alouds, small-group literature discussions, independent reading, and reading response activities throughout the school year. The books will provide opportunities for students to engage with a variety of genres, expand vocabulary, strengthen reading comprehension, and develop critical thinking skills. Students will participate in book talks, collaborative discussions, and writing activities that encourage them to make connections, share opinions, and deepen their understanding of the texts.
The floor pillows will help create a comfortable and inviting classroom reading area where students can independently read, participate in partner reading, and work in small literacy groups. By providing access to high-interest literature and flexible seating, students will be encouraged to spend more time reading, increase their engagement in literacy activities, and develop positive reading habits. The project will support both academic growth and a lifelong love of reading by making reading an enjoyable and accessible experience for all students.
