The goal of Building a Classroom of Readers is to strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and overall reading engagement by expanding students’ access to high-quality, age-appropriate texts. By providing a variety of fiction and nonfiction reading materials, this project will encourage students to read more frequently, explore different genres and topics, and develop the habits and confidence needed to become lifelong readers.
This project will expand our third-grade classroom library with current Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) books, titles from the Collier Classics reading list, and popular boxed book sets that encourage students to continue reading books within a favorite series. Students will have regular opportunities to select books based on their interests and reading goals for independent reading, classroom discussions, and literacy activities.
A classroom subscription to Scholastic News will provide students with engaging, grade-level informational texts connected to science, social studies, current events, and real-world topics. Students will use these articles to practice essential reading skills such as identifying central ideas and relevant details, building vocabulary, making inferences, analyzing text features, and discussing information with their peers.
Together, these resources will provide students with greater choice and variety while creating a classroom environment in which reading is an important and enjoyable part of every day.
Students will benefit from increased access to engaging books and informational texts that appeal to a wide range of interests and reading preferences. SSYRA and Collier Classics titles will expose students to high-quality literature and encourage participation in school and schoolwide reading initiatives, while popular boxed sets will help build reading stamina by motivating students to continue reading within series they enjoy.
Scholastic News will strengthen students’ ability to comprehend informational text while also building background knowledge about science, social studies, current events, and the world around them. Having a wider selection of relevant and appealing texts readily available in the classroom will encourage independent reading, support vocabulary and comprehension development, and help students grow into more confident, enthusiastic readers.
Grant funds will be used to purchase SSYRA titles, books from the Collier Classics list, popular boxed book sets, and a classroom subscription to Scholastic News. These resources will expand our classroom library and provide students with greater access to engaging, high-quality fiction and nonfiction texts. Funding will help ensure that students have a variety of books and reading materials available to support both independent reading and classroom instruction.
