The goal of this project is to purchase and provide multilingual learners in a Biology classroom with individual Scientific Spanish-to-English dictionaries. These are specifically designed to support scientific vocabulary and content. These specialized dictionaries will give students a resource for translating and understanding scientific terminology that they encounter throughout the Biology course. By providing direct access to science specific language support, this project will help bridge language barriers, strengthen scientific vocabulary, increase student confidence and empower the students to independently access and participate in Biology this year and for years to come.
Students will use the scientific Spanish-to-English dictionaries as an everyday resource in the Biology classroom. Students will be taught how to use the dictionaries to identify, translate, and understand unfamiliar scientific vocabulary while reading textbooks, completing assignments, conducting labs, and participating in classroom discussions. Students will also use the dictionaries to build their personal science vocabulary and connect Spanish terminology that they already understand, with the English language used in class. By incorporating the dictionaries into daily instruction, students will become more confident and independent when accessing grade-level science content in English.
This grant will help remove language barriers that might prevent English Language Learners from fully accessing Biology content. Students will strengthen their scientific vocabulary, increase and build their confidence using the English language, and become more independent learners. Providing students with scientific Spanish-to-English dictionaries will allow them to use the language they already know as a bridge to understanding scientific concepts more deeply and participating more fully in Biology.
Funding will be used to purchase a classroom set of Scientific Spanish-English glossaries for students enrolled in Biology. Unlike a general bilingual dictionary, the Velazquez Science Glossary is designed to directly support students with the scientific vocabulary they are exposed to in biology, and other science courses. Each student will have access to the classroom resource that can be used throughout the school year across many different activities, direct instruction, reading, assignments, labs, and more.
Providing a classroom set will allow students to independently access unfamiliar scientific vocabulary without having to rely solely on teacher or digital translation. Students will learn how to use another resource they have access to while learning biology concepts. The funding will directly support greater student independence, confidence, and access to grade-level biology content, while helping create a learning environment available for multilingual learners.
