Additional Details

The goal of this project is to provide fourth-grade students with authentic, hands-on science experiences by using resin-preserved insects, arachnids, amphibians, reptiles, and other animal specimens. Students will safely observe, compare, classify, and investigate real organisms while developing scientific observation skills, asking questions, and making evidence-based conclusions. These specimens will support Florida’s fourth-grade science standards and increase student engagement through inquiry-based learning.
Students will use the resin specimens throughout the school year during whole-group lessons, small-group investigations, and science centers. They will: * Observe and record physical characteristics using scientific tools and journals. * Compare and classify organisms based on observable traits. * Investigate structures and adaptations that help organisms survive in their environments. * Learn about life cycles, habitats, ecosystems, food webs, and biodiversity. * Practice scientific observation, questioning, and evidence collection. * Participate in inquiry labs where students make predictions, test ideas, and communicate scientific findings. * Use the specimens during review activities and collaborative STEM challenges. Because the specimens are safely preserved in clear resin, students can closely examine real organisms that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to bring into the classroom.
This project will provide engaging, hands-on learning opportunities that increase curiosity and scientific thinking. Many students have never had the opportunity to closely examine real specimens. Resin-preserved organisms allow repeated observation without damage or safety concerns. Students will benefit by: * Increasing engagement through authentic science experiences. * Developing observation and critical thinking skills. * Building a deeper understanding of life science concepts. * Supporting diverse learning styles through tactile and visual learning. * Encouraging curiosity and inquiry. * Creating memorable learning experiences that foster a lifelong interest in science. The specimens will be used with approximately 70 fourth-grade students each day across multiple class rotations and can continue to benefit students for many years, making this a long-term investment in science education
Funding will be used to purchase a classroom collection of high-quality resin-preserved animal and insect specimens. The collection will include a variety of insects, arachnids, amphibians, reptiles, marine organisms, and other preserved specimens that align with elementary life science standards. These durable materials require little maintenance, are safe for repeated student handling, and can be reused for many years. The requested materials will become a permanent part of the classroom science collection and will support instruction across multiple units throughout the school year.
