The goal of this project is to help our kindergarten through second-grade students develop a love for literature by incorporating the Florida State Sunshine Books Junior Division into our classrooms. Every year, our school has the students vote on their favorite SSYRA Jr. book. Having a classroom set allows the students to read these books and prepare to choose their favorite one. This will help students meet reading standard or reading books at grade level and writing opinion pieces. It helps with the civics area of our social studies standards through a real world voting experience. It will also help support a positive school culture through buddy reading.
The students will read the different books either independently or with support through a Read Aloud or buddy reading with older students. Next, the students will choose their favorite book and write an opinion writing piece about their chosen book. Finally, this will also have cross curricular impacting our Social Studies learning experiences for the students. The official Collier County voting machines will be brought to our school to allow the students to experience the same voting process that adults experience on election day.
The benefits of this program are multiple. It helps students gain experience reading many different types of books and choosing a favorite. This helps them develop not only their skills as a reader but also a love for literature. Through this project students will experience voting using the same process we use as adults. This project will also help us create a positive school culture through buddy reading with older students.
This money will be spent to order 6 copies of each title, 2 for each classroom library in kindergarten through second grade.
