To increase success in Geometry and raise the pass rate for the End-Of-Course exam (EOC).
To build confidence and persistence in critical thinking and problem-solving.
Setting an upbeat and positive tone in the classroom, starting at the very beginning of the year, will encourage students to take risks as they learn to "do math better".
Keeping encouragement consistently high throughout the year to build student confidence in their improving math skills and knowledge.
Students will have the opportunity to experience multi-lingual support, targeted differentiated strategies, hands-on manipulatives, and multimodal interactive instruction (with group work, and reading/writing/problem-solving strategies embedded in lessons).
Increased attendance in class.
More on-task behavior and students develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving.
Less off-task behaviors as evidenced by lower disciplinary interventions.
Improvement in formative and summative assessments throughout the year.
Increased pass rate on the EOC as a final high-stakes test.
These students in Geometry often struggle with the challenges of complex language and multi-step problems. Increasing motivation and positive energy to develop a can-do attitude is often a challenge. Motivational and organizational posters set the tone for making the best effort, striving to continue when the math feels hard. Many students in these classes have historically struggled to be successful. I plan to help change that mindset, and subsequently improve their test scores (and enjoyment of math). Providing basic student materials, such as pencils and paper, allows students to focus on learning. Classroom materials like tissues, Band-Aids, and sanitizing wipes help us all stay healthy and focused on learning.
